Xbox users can now enjoy Discord integration

Xbox has partnered with Discord to bring the popular voice chat program and all around team speak client to Xbox consoles. Participants of the Xbox Insider program can connect and chat with anyone on Discord using the console alone; after some fiddling with your mobile phone that is. The news comes from Xbox Wire

“Get ready to connect with your Discord friends and communities on Xbox! Discord Voice chat is coming to your Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles. You will be able to chat with anyone on Discord via voice channels or group calls directly from your console making it easy to connect with friends across mobile, Xbox, and PC. The update will start rolling out to Xbox Insiders today and will be available soon for everyone.”

Despite being only available to a select few Xbox Insiders from their Insider program, Discord integration bodes well for the service, players and Xbox as well to help bridge the gap of connecting communities under the one device, that being your Xbox console. The feature isn’t perfect at the moment however, folks have to use a mobile phone to hand-off sessions over to your Xbox to make it work. We’re hoping that in the next few months that Discord will have its own app on the store to make it work seamlessly without the use of a phone, but baby steps right?

In its current build, text chat isn’t available, so only voice chat rooms are available. I do hope at some point that text chat will receive integration, as it’s a great way of letting others communicate with you when you have a poor quality mic, impractical living room setups or for shy types like me.

If you’d like access to this feature soon and all other experimental ones, you can check it out from the Xbox Insider Hub available for your PC and Xbox Consoles. Earlier this year, Xbox started work on integrating Twitch into their consoles too and we’re hoping for more innovative solutions like these from the Xbox Insider program at some point.
