We’re halfway through October and things are definitely getting spooky especially with these great horror games on Xbox Game Pass to haunt all the days leading up to Halloween! Feel that chill in the air, because these are the spookiest games on Xbox Game Pass.
If the supernatural isn’t your cup of tea and you’re more of a sci-fi person, Alien: Isolation, by Creative Assembly, does an impressive job at recreating the feeling of being within the critically acclaimed Alien movie by Ridley Scott. Playing as Amanda Ripley, in a first person perspective, explore a space station completing objectives while trying to sneak, survive and outsmart a Xenomorph! Are you sure it’s safe to go out of the vents yet?
A Plague Tale: Requiem
If you have musophobia — that is to say, an overwhelming fear of mice and rats — it might be best to skip A Plague Tale: Requiem. The sequel to 2019’s A Plague Tale: Innocence by Asobo Studio, Requiem is a dark survival adventure filled with puzzle. The game tracks the harrowing journey of Amicia and Hugo, two young children who are trying to find their way in a world where humans are even more vicious than the rat swarms that plague the countryside.
Dead by Daylight
There’s strength in numbers, but in this case your friends might not be enought to save you. Dead by Daylight, by Behaviour Interactive, is a multiplayer horror game where four surivors try to evade and escape an area that’s being patrolled by a killer. The catch is that the killer is also a player! New popular killers have been added to the game as well including Leatherface, Freddy Kruger and Pyramid Head! Kill or be killed in one of the best horror games on Game Pass!
The Evil Within 2
A third person survival horror game by Tango Gameworks, The Evil Within 2 puts Sebastian Castellanos within nightmarish situations where he needs to fight and survive disfigured enemies, traps and bosses alike. The atmosphere of the darkly lit areas impose a sense of dread as you slowly explore this haunted setting. Do you dare investigate this madhouse? If you liked the Resident Evil franchise but are looking for something different, both the first and second Evil Within games are available on Game Pass.
The Walking Dead
Based on the comic book series of the same name (and the same IP that inspired the long-lasting AMC television franchise), The Walking Dead is the breakthrough instance of developer Telltale Games’ episodic adventure formula. Dialogue options customize your experience of the narrative, in which history professor and convicted felon Lee Everett he takes on the responsibility of caring for Clementine, a young girl as they explore a world overrun by the undead.
Immersive sim but make it terrifying. While Prey clearly descends from games like Deus Ex and Arkane’s own Dishonored series, it also has many of the elements that typify survival horror games. As Morgan Yu, players struggle to survive aboard the scientific research station Talos I after a hostile alien species breaks in. Prey is filled with psychological and supernatural terror and is filled with tense, nerve-wracking encounters and an intriguing existential mystery.
One of the most fascinating game stories of the year, Immortality presents a mystery about a forgotten film actress and her three unreleased films. Players are tasked to review these films using a suite of editing tools (not unlike an old Moviola desk) to uncover the truth behind her disappearance. As you click from one clip to another, Immortality takes on some horror tones. We won’t spoil it here, but Immortality’s exploration of the inequitable relationship between ingenues and filmmakers and exploitation in the name of art and commerce is truly compelling. We gave it a 9/10 in our review.
This side-scrolling pixel action game might look pretty typical of the kind of games coming out of the indie space, but with its grim, dark gothic art style and punishing difficulty, Moonscars feels determined to replicate the intense challenge and byzantine mechanical layers of a Souls-like. That being said, it’s the dreary, miserable setting and the betrayal and suffering painted across it that makes Moonscars’ world just as compelling as its challenges.
This first-person adventure really leans into terrifying and unnatural forms that typify body horror and the art work of H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. In Scorn, you awaken to a bizarre world where nothing is as it seems and the environment is an unsettling character into itself. Each level is filled with strange puzzles built out of weird architecutre and technology. Scorn’s biggest asset is its art design, which successfully plunges you into a nightmarish world filled with bio-organic machinery.
Now then all those horror games on Game Pass should fill your nights with screams and terror. We haven’t finished every single one of these games but now’s a good time as any! Carl has been playing them in a well-lit room with a snuggie just to be safe!
Update, October 25, 2022: This list has been updated to reflect the removal of Visage, A Plague Tale: Innocence, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, and The Dark Pictures Antholology from the service.
