Bethesda released a short video for Starfield about the Settled Systems that gives us more information about the game’s setting and factions. Design director Emil Pagliarulo turns our attention to “an area of our solar system we call The Settled Systems.”
Emil goes on to say that, “Our game is set in the year 2330, in a relatively small pocket of the Milky Way, in an area that extends outward from our solar system for approximately 50 light years.” With that setting, Starfield seems to be a bit more grounded than some of the more fantastical sci-fi games out there that take place further into the future and beyond the edge of our galaxy. But I digress.
Emil continues to say that, around 20 years before the start of the game, the two largest factions in the Settled Systems were engaged in a bloody Colony War. The factions are the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective. Personally, I’m intrigued by this faction angle: it reminds me of other Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim, where factions have goals and prejudices that make them unique and interesting.
Emil states that when you start Starfield, the major factions enjoy an uneasy peace and that the Settled Systems is still a dangerous place. There will be human threats present and some of them are, “Ecliptic mercenaries, the pirates of the Crimson Fleet, violent Spacers, or even the fanatical religious zealots of the Hous Va’ruun.” Ah yes, space raiders. I can’t wait to find out more and also possibly obliterate them with my space gun.
Lastly, the video comes to a close revealing that you’ll be playing as one of the newest members for an organization known as the Constellation, a group committed to uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy where you’ll explore the deepest reaches of the Starfield’s Settled Systems.
In other Starfield news you might have missed, Bethesda released a bunch of other videos describing other locations in the game such as the United Colonies’ capital of New Atlantis, the fishing platform turned pleasure city known as Neon and Akila City, the home of the Freestar Collective. They’re short but feature some interesting commentary and a glimpse at the places and sights we can experience when Starfield launches.
Starfield comes to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on November 11, 2022 and as is customary for Xbox Game Studios titles, launches day one on Xbox Game Pass. Despite a long history on multiple platforms, Bethesda Game Studios will not be releasing Starfield on PlayStation and our managing editor Matthew Arcilla theorizes it’s part of Microsoft’s consolidation of the power of Game Pass.
