At today’s Xbox 20th anniversary stream event, Microsoft announced Power On: The Story of Xbox, a six-part documentary series about the history of the console.
“Xbox almost didn’t happen,” reads the official description for the segment on YouTube. “Find out why in this behind-the-scenes, six-part series that takes you back to the scrappy beginnings of Microsoft’s video game console. It’s the untold story of the people behind the box, glitches and all.”
Power On will focus largely on the genesis of the original Xbox, and the documentary centers on names and faces like Seamus Blackley and Ed Fries. All will recount the uphill battle of getting a wild idea — conquering the living room with a games console — to become a reality despite opposition from within Microsoft and huge logistical and technical challenges.
Power On: The Story of Xbox is set to premiere on December 13, 2021 on “a variety of streaming platforms.”
