More information regarding Payday 3 was released during the franchise’s 10th anniversary livestream by publisher and developer Starbreeze. Game director Erik Wonnevi said that the game takes place several years after Payday 2 when the entire gang is pulled back into a life of crime in New York City. All four original characters make their return (and not on their own terms): Dallas, Chains, Hoxton and Wolf.
“The gang has been gone for enough time for the world to have changed in some ways and they need to get back in shape, so speak, as well as adapt to this new world,” Wonnevi said. “And for one thing, the world has transitioned futher into the digital age, so software giants, cryptocurrencies, mass surveillance and dark web.”
“And this is something that you can see reflected in the future updates to gadgetry, for example, for the gang. So it’s both new challenges but of course new opportunities as well.”
A Payday game where it makes use of these digital mcguffins sound interesting indeed and may make for some interesting gameplay if not narrative implications. Just thinking of what nasty things they may uncover from the dark web or having to deal with cryptocurrencies is quite enticing.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Starbreeze has in store for us as we’re left to imagine setting up heart pounding heists with Payday 3 in New York City. Concept art for the all four original members were also shown as well as the game’s New York setting. No gameplay has been revealed or any new mechanics yet but I definitely would like to know more.
If you’re looking to check out the live stream as well as a 4 part video celebration of Payday’s 10th anniversary, you can check it out in this playlist.
Payday 3 is currently slated for release sometime in 2023, presumably for PC, Xbox Series X|S and possibly Xbox One.
