Developer Hangar 13 celebrates 20 years of Mafia by confirming sequel in development

As of this August, it’s been 20 years since the first Mafia game, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, was released and Hangar 13 celebrated the 20th anniversary by confirming that another sequel to Mafia is in the works.

News mainly comes from the Mafia blog to which Hangar 13’s General Manager, Roman Hladík confirmed that work has started for a new game in the series. “I’m happy to confirm we’ve started work on an all-new Mafia project! While it’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more right now, we’re really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories.”

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, debuted back in 2002, with a sequel that arrived much later in 2010. Six years later, Mafia 3 would be released by 2K’s new studio Hangar 13. While the game received only good to above average ratings and criticisms of rehashed open world gameplay, I enjoyed my time within Mafia 3’s troubled world.

Despite the relative success of that endeavor, throughout the years Hangar 13 has suffered multiple layoffs to their team. It’s good to know though that Hangar 13 is pulling through these past couple of months and we’re now hearing good news from them.

The Mafia series has had its ups and downs but loyal fans of the series still look forward to the next installment. While the GTA series’ popularity may stem from the over the top missions and side activities within the world. Mafia sets its series apart from the likes of Grand Theft Auto with its emphasis on a cinematic story experience and a more serious tone. The series is known for its period settings and emphasis on historical verisimilitude.

Additionally, 2K is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Mafia franchise by giving the original Mafia away on Steam from September 1 to 5. It’s a good way to dip your toes into the world of Mafia and despite how old the game is, it still tells a great story. The remastered version of the game, Mafia: Definitive Edition is also available on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.
