Obsidian’s early access sandbox Grounded is getting an animated series

Grounded, Obsidian’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” inspired game, is confirmed as one of the next video games to be getting an animated series.  The announcement was made via the Obsidian blog.

The series is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox in association with Waterproof Studios/SC Productions, Kinetic Media and Bardel Entertainment. Brent Friedman, a writer for Star Wars Clone Wars is attached to the project. Fun fact! Friedman also wrote a script treatment for a potential Fallout movie for the now defunct Interplay Films, all the way back in 1998.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the Grounded series will exist within the same universe as the game, following four friends who will end up accidentally shrunk to about two inches and then learn to survive in a backyard where day to day insects now pose as threats. Other than that, a “vast corporate conspiracy” threatening the town would also come into play, and we’re guessing it has something to do with how the kids are getting shrunk.

Friedman will be working with Brien Goodrich, who previously worked as a cinematics director on Halo 4 and 5. The development team will also be hosting an in-person booth at the coming San Diego Comic Con this July and the show is planned to be taken to Mipcom and Kidscreen later this year.

“We couldn’t be more excited about diving into the whimsical universe of Grounded. This partnership will be one of great collaboration, expanding on an already wonderful journey of exploration and adventure,” said Tina Chow, CEO, Bardel Entertainment.

“The team at Obsidian have created an incredible world that has already grabbed the attention of the gaming community. We are excited to work with our incredible partners to bring the story to life in an animated series,” added Carl Whiteside, MD, WP/SC Productions.

Grounded launched as an early access title back in July of 2020 and has had over 10 million players. More will surely join once the game leaves early access in September 2022. A trailer advertising the version 1.0 launch was presented at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase last month.

Grounded is currently available as a Game Preview for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S via the Microsoft Store, though it is also available via Game Pass.
