GoldenEye 007 is a legendary classic that originally launched in 1997 on the Nintendo 64 and was one of the pioneers of first person shooters on consoles, before games like Halo took the torch and ran with it. It was developed by the British studio Rare with decades of history building games for Nintendo platforms before it was acquired by Microsoft in 2002.
TrueAchievements is a site that syncs and tracks activity and updates on Xbox Live pertaining to Achievements and also serves up news and information about current and upcoming Xbox games. They have an extensive database of games and achievements on the Xbox platform, and these leaked achievements are said to be taken from live console servers and feature artwork for each challenge.
This is an interesting development as it was reported last year by VGC that Microsoft had completed a remaster of the Nintendo classic, but it was shelved following issues and miscommunication between the team that built it and the license holders for the game who had never signed a deal for the remaster together.
Ultimately, the takeaway here is that a GoldenEye 007 remake or remaster rather than say, a backwards compatible port and re-release is possible. Based on the text of the Achievements, it seems that this version of GoldenEye 007 could feature multiplayer in addition to its beloved campaign.
According to TrueAchievements, these leaked achievements have been unlocked by two users: BigSheep and Xtinamcgrath. These are Gamertags that appear to belong to James Thomas, lead engineer at Rare and Christina McGrath, community head at Rare.
Coincidentally, the new year of 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise. The official Twitter account for the franchise just teased that fans should “watch out for announcements, events, and new content across 2022,” and the return of GoldenEye 007 could be one of those announcements.
