Far Cry 6 gameplay reveal pegs launch date for October

Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 gameplay reveal broadcast finally unveiled footage of the long awaited sixth installment in the series of destruction playgrounds.

If you were one of those stalwart advocates for the immersive realism of Far Cry 2, you’ll be disappoint ed. But if you love the goofy bits of the series, such as Far Cry 5’s shovel launcher or having Horatio the giant boar as your sidekick in Far Cry New Dawn, then you’ll love some of the crazy DIY weapons and gear that are on display in the new gameplay footage.

The new trailer also revealed our release date: October 7. In an uncertain gaming year — we’re counting on you Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase — Far Cry 6 comes riding into the ber months to bring us chaos, madness and also a crocodile that can be summoned with a whistle. My favorite touch is the one where protagonist Dani Rojas smokes a cigar and stubs it on their skin. What’s that about?

As Dani Rojas, players will join the revolution to liberate the country of Yara — once a crown jewel of the Caribbean — from the oppressive rule of a dictator Anton Castillo, played by legendary character actor Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Boys). There also seems to be some angle in the story involving Castillo’s young son Diego, played by Anthony Gonzalez (Coco) who appears to have conflicting feelings about his father’s reign of terror.

According to narrative director Navid Khavari, players will get to live out the “guerrilla fantasy” and will be joined by many rebel allies like Juan Cortez, an ex-KGB spy and guerilla master and plan the resistance with Clara Garcia, leader of the revolutionary group Libertad. There won’t be any “guns for hire” this time around though, just animal pals like Chorizo, the world’s most fearsome wiener dog and Guapo, the gold-tooth crocodile.

The Far Cry 6 gameplay reveal placed most of its emphasis on tactics and weapons. You can approach situations using stealth by blending in with the civilians and bribing Castillo’s men, or you can sabotage their equipment and of course, you can shoot and blow stuff up when things go sideways. As for weapons, the usual guns and rifles abound surely, but there’s a focus on DIY weapons like an engine powered mini-gun and lethal compact disc launcher.

As is typical with Ubisoft, there are multiple editions of the game. The $60 Standard Edition gets you the base game. The $100 Gold Edition adds a Season Pass promising 3 major pieces of downloadable content. The $120 Ultimate Edition features everything the Gold Edition has plus exclusive gear and clothes as DLC.

There’s also a $200 Collector’s Edition that adds a replica DIY flamethrower called “Tostador” (7 parts to be assembled), a “How To Assemble” one-page art sheet by award-winning artist Toby Leigh, a unique Collector’s Case based on Leigh’s work and an exclusive steelbook. This is only available as a physical pre-order as Ubisoft could not figure out how to make the flamethrower available for download.

Far Cry 6 arrives for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Windows 10 PCs on October 7, 2021.
