Odyssey, the latest Elite Dangerous expansion is on hold on consoles for as long as is needed to prioritize fixes on PC. Frontier Developments CEO David Braben personally addressed the community once more to address the state of Odyssey, saying that he accepts and recognizes “the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey.”
This isn’t our first report on Elite Dangerous and we’re sorry to report that trouble and turmoil has been a constant in players’ experience of the second paid expansion for the massively multiplayer open galaxy space sim. The expansion was released on PC in mid-May but numerous issues such as performance problems and UI design issues have been a thorn in players’ sides.
A recent update was supposed to address its most heavily criticized aspects, but in the month since, other issues have emerged such as frame rate drops and connectivity problems. While most have been addressed, the most shocking issue is the LOD (level of detail) issue with its planet-terrain generation, in which interesting terrain features gradually disappear as players’ approach a planet’s surface.
In order to concentrate on fixing up Odyssey on the PC, Frontier Developments has decided to change up the timeline of other planned updates to the game, including the launch of the expansion on Xbox and PlayStation. Originally set for third quarter 2021, no new release date has been set. This is no trivial matter, as Odyssey had massive ambitions, loading thousands of new destinations to the game.
“We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future,” Braben explained on the game’s official forums. “But the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release.”
Elite Dangerous is available on Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass for PC sans expansions. Odyssey, the latest Elite Dangerous expansion was slated for Xbox and PlayStation later this year but as stated, is now on hold.
