Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is coming to Xbox, but not FF7 Remake

Final Fantasy 7 just had its 25th Anniversary celebration stream and the good news is that Xbox will be getting a game out of it, it just won’t be Final Fantasy 7 Remake or its upcoming sequel Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The 15 minute presentation from Square Enix announced Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, a spin-off / remaster coming to all major consoles and PC this “winter.”

Crisis Core Remaster Trailer

Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is an HD remaster, or a graphical face-lift, of an old PlayStation Portable (PSP) game set in the same universe and timeline of Final Fantasy VII. It follows Zack Fair, a happy-go-lucky Shinra Soldier who dreams of achieving the rank of Soldier First Class. His adventures occur prior to the events of Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core provides further story context about multiple elements about Shinra, Sephiroth, Aerith, Cloud’s Buster Sword and other world-building details to Final Fantasy 7.

The trailer shows us that the game will keep its core gameplay mechanics such as the slot machine DMW system along with giving it a massive overhaul to its graphics; not to mention being playable in current gen machines. As mentioned, the game was only previously available on the PSP, Sony’s first successful handheld console, and that exclusivity made it damn near impossible to play for most new Final Fantasy 7 fans. While most of the more dedicated fans already know Zack’s story, Crisis Core will assuredly provide the necessary context to some of the new storylines in Final Fantasy 7 Remake & Rebirth.

While we did find out Xbox is getting Crisis Core soon during Winter, we also found out that Final Fantasy 7 Remake still won’t be coming to Xbox, at least not for the foreseeable future. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, the enhanced / complete edition of Final Fantasy 7 Remake got its Steam release but no announcement was made for Xbox. I was one of the folks hoping Xbox would get Final Fantasy VII Remake after the timed exclusivity deal ended with the Epic Games Store. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case this time around.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is set to for a winter release on PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
