Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, last year’s wise cracking cosmic adventure romp from Square Enix and Eidos Montreal is now on Xbox and PC Game Pass.
The subscription service has also added Kentucky Route Zero, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 and Lawn Mowing Simulator to round out this week’s additions, as well as Far: Changing Tides and Young Souls as its day-one release date offerings. Microsoft Flight Simulator has also been added to Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is part of any Game Pass Ultimate subscription, letting you stream the open sky on a mobile device, Xbox One or low-spec PC.
With a Metacritic score of 84 and an 86% Critics Recommended score on OpenCritic, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy scored some pretty strong reviews. But Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix, said in a recent financial results briefing that the game ‘undershot’ expectations. If that’s true then strong reviews were clearly not enough to drive consumers to pick the game up during its initial launch period.
This was either a result of skepticism accumulated by the continued disappointments of Mavel’s Avengers or a failure of marketing to properly connect with audiences. And that’s a shame as Eidos Montreal delivered the most likable incarnation of the team in a story that takes surprising twists and turns both epic and heartfelt.
And while the game’s combat feels underdeveloped and at times repetitive, the solid writing delivered by a team of writers led by narrative director Mary DeMarle at Eidos Montreal bagged the game multiple awards including Best Narrative at The Game Awards and Outstanding Achievement in Story at this year’s DICE Awards.
All that being said, you owe it to yourself to play Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy if you haven’t already, now that it’s on Game Pass. In our review of the game, we said that “while it isn’t a particularly original piece of work, it’s a welcome surprise this year as a wildly entertaining, visually spectacular and very often heartfelt adventure with sneaky helpings of choice baked between the layers of its 20 hour campaign.”
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is now available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass for PC, Xbox One consoles, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
