There are 40 demos live now on Xbox, thanks to the ID@Xbox Summer Game Demo Fest. The total lineup is a broad spread of genres and art styles and is a cool way to show upcoming games this hot summer. The showcase is crucial for an E3 that doesn’t have any physical demo space for the press and the public to enjoy, but wonderful for everyone else who just wants to have a taste of what’s coming.
Of the 40 demos live are some of the most talked about games like Tunic, Sable, Lake and Echo Generation. As this is ID@Xbox — the company’s initiative for promoting and publishing indie games — that means indies only, don’t expect an early look at The Outer Worlds 2 or Starfield as not only are those big budget affairs but they’re too far away from release to even consider showing.
These are all early looks at games, some earlier than others, so they may not be entirely representative of what the final game will look, sound and play like. The demos can be downloaded and activated between June 15 and June 21. In my experience, platforms like Xbox (or even Steam) sometimes forget to deactivate demos for a few days after the end of a demo fest but don’t count on it.
I’m personally looking forward to trying out Lake, in which you play a young woman who returns to her hometown and takes over her dad’s old postal route while discovering how things have changed in the years she’s been gone. I’m already stoked for Sable, so that’s a must-try, and I’m sure Tunic will be good fun. People on my Twitter feed seem strangely excited for Lawn Mowing Simulator, so yay for them.
